Reforestation
Planting is aimed to initiate and increase timber
growth. A landowner can reforest either by natural regeneration
or seedling planting depending on the objective of the
land. A common practice is to plant genetically improved
seedlings on cut over land or open fields which will increase
the rate of timber growth. Planting can be done by hand
or mechanically.
The
fact is, mother nature will produce around 50-60
mature trees per acre in a hardwood stand at about 60-70
years of age. After stands have been harvested and reforested
with geneticaly improved Loblolly Pine trees after 35-40
years of age the stand will produce 110-120 trees per
acre of mature sawtimber trees.
