Reforestation and Timber Growth
Planting geneticaly imporved trees plays a critical role in increasing timber growth, producing healthier, faster-growing stands. Landowners have two main options for reforesting after a harvest: natural regeneration or planting seedlings, depending on the land's specific objectives.
A widely used and effective method is planting genetically improved seedlings—especially on cut-over land or open fields. These seedlings, often selected for traits like disease resistance and rapid growth, significantly boost the rate of timber production.
To put it into perspective, in a natural hardwood stand, Mother Nature typically produces about 50–60 mature trees per acre by the time the stand reaches 60–70 years of age. In contrast, reforesting with genetically improved Loblolly Pine seedlings can yield 110–120 mature sawtimber trees per acre in just 30–40 years.
More trees per acre directly translate into higher volume and, ultimately, faster economic return.
